As I’ve been thinking about 2012 and that it marked the year when I took my sketchbook places I’d never taken it before, I started to wonder what other places in my life I could take my sketchbook and draw.
I HAVE taken it to my school where I teach and I’ve drawn there on a few occasions. But I’d like to do that more!
I have taken it with me on trips to visit with family, either to Boone (above drawing is of mom, who always “hides”:)
…or to the beach (like the Prince Resort in Cherry Grove, SC above. Or to Oak Island, NC with my husband’s family: Click on highlighted words to view my video of last summer’s trip to the beach in sketches!
I have taken it to Mr. Whicker’s field at the top of my neighborhood.
And, of course, I’ve taken it into my yard numerous times.
And all around the inside of my home!!
But I haven’t ever taken it to church or to church activities. Maybe once or twice. Perhaps this will be the year I’ll draw the people I love in our little congregation. Maybe I’ll sketch different events there.
I also haven’t ever taken it with me to the grocery store or to Walmart, where I spend a good bit of time. I’m not sure that I’d have the guts to stand or sit there drawing in these places. But it might be a good thing to do. I have a feeling that if I took my sketchbook with me to the Mall in nearby Winston-Salem, I could get some really cool sketches of people shopping and of store windows. But I’m not much of a Mall shopper. We’ll see…
How about you? If you were to draw where you’ve never drawn before, where would that be? Would you like to sketch in these places? Why? or why not?
It’s fun to think about anyway. I love this quote about artists.
“Draw everywhere and all the time. An artist is a sketchbook with a person attached.” (Irwin Greenberg)
I’m still too scared to draw in public places much!!
I love your artwork & look forward to seeing more in 2013. Happy New Year!
Maybe 2013 is your year to “go public”! All the best to you Viv!
I want to sketch in a grocery store now
Go for it Mary! I’d love to see what you draw there!
This year I will be brave and draw in public. I’m sure ill try to be as incognito as possible!
Maybe I can come to Reidsville and we will go downtown and draw together! 🙂
Wonderful collection of sketches! You’ve got me thinking. I always sketch in the same old routine places. There are times I would love to pull out my sketchbook but usually I am with the family and on the go so it doesn’t work out. I always thought a fun place to sketch would be an antique or resell shop. I’ve never had the guys to do it though.
Oooh, that sounds like an awesome place to draw!!! So many fun shapes and lots going on! I hope you get to do it this year!
I love to draw in the natural history museum in Ann Arbor. It’s fun to draw the animals and birds there, not to mention the people. I haven’t drawn at the zoo before – I think that would be fun. I also love to sketch in waiting rooms – most of the time the people are sitting still – makes things a lot easier for me! nancy
Wow! A Natural History museum would be amazing to go sketch there!! Super idea! I’ve also drawn in waiting rooms, but find that the larger ones are easier as people don’t realize what you’re doing as readily. The small waiting rooms, people get a little fidgety when they realize you are drawing them. 🙂
Lovely encouragement, Jennifer, in art and in words. Thank you.
Jennifer—are you originally from Watauga? I grew up in Avery County.
I’m not a mall shopper either, but it is certainly a good place to watch people…and draw. My goal is definitely to get out a do more of this in the coming year.
Yes! I’m a Watauga County girl! I graduated from Watauga High in 1983. (I think I’m a good bit older than you!) Did you know that a few folks get together and draw on Friday mornings in downtown Kernersville? Come join us anytime you can!
Nothing but great experiences have resulted when I’ve drawn in grocery stores, shops, etc. It’s also fun to draw in the midst of baking cookies, doing the laundry and cleaning the house.
I love the sketch of your mom hiding behind the newspaper!
These are beautiful! 🙂 I think I should shift gear a little and draw places instead of faces now ^^
Can’t wait to see the places you go Alex! I love the faces you draw, but it is fun to switch things up a bit.
