I heard a poem being read on NPR the other day. I thought it was so lovely and wanted to share it with you.
Autumn
The leaves are falling, falling as if from far up,
as if orchards were dying high in space.
Each leaf falls as if it were motioning “no.”
And tonight the heavy earth is falling
away from all other stars in the loneliness.
We’re all falling. This hand here is falling.
And look at the other one. It’s in them all.
And yet there is Someone, whose hands
infinitely calm, holding up all this falling.
-Rainer Maria Rilke
I find it fascinating how we each see things differently. Where one might see leaves falling and think the leaves are saying “NO” as they fall, another might think the leaves are dancing.
What do you think of when you see the leaves falling?
I’m blown away!!! Pun intended!
Luscious leaves. And aren’t poets wonderful? I ran across a poem describing tulips as “not so much wilting as fainting. ” Their words reach into our heads Like paintbrushes and create these surprising images of leaves motioning No and tulips fainting.
What a beautiful way to think about poetry as “reaching into our heads like paintbrushes to create surprising images”…love that Kristy! Thank you for your comment here. I hope you have a lovely creative day!
I am over 70 and still pause often to pick up gorgeous leaves that flutter across my paths.
I have a feeling, when I am over 70, I will too!! Thank you for taking the time to read my blog and comment here Tricia!
