YP#1

Well, folks…here is Yarn Painting #1.  I’ve actually had this 10 x 10 inch square done since the winter.  I kept telling myself I would share it when I did all the completion work:  a fabric backing which allows for a dowel or twig to run through it for hanging on the wall.  Alas, these things often don’t get done.  I wanted to share it with you anyway.

It has elements of Freeform Crochet.  This is a technique of crocheting, often called scrumbling, which reminds me of abstract painting.  But here, instead of a free-for-all, any stitch, any which-a-ways…I’ve wrestled the stitches and yarns into something we can recognize…a fanciful teacup with 4 o’clock on the wall (tea time:).  It was fun to make, but took me for-ev-er.  Not because of the stichwork…it was the planning, deciding which yarns, which stitches, what embellishments, am-I-finished, etc.

It, of course, began with a drawing; simple shapes to guide what I was crocheting.  You can see I rejected my first idea of a landscape in the background.  I need to make a few more of these yarn paintings to really get the hang of it…

If I do, I’ll show and tell.

Wow, this is cool! Wish I could crotchet… But as easy a pen lies in my hand, I feel like a 3-year-old with three pairs of gloves on top of each other when it comes to stuff like that! (Actually, I somethimes even get moments of hysteria from threading a needle.
Looking forward to seeing more of these! <3

Thank you Johanna! I visited the site you give here and it is wonderful!! Phenomenal actually…to me, it would be much harder to knit yarn paintings rather than crochet them. Thanks for sharing this!

Amazing that you can do that with crochet! I can barely hem my own pants, so I’ll leave this type of work to you and just let you know you’re fabulous at it!
